Recently, the Ministry of Sports raised concerns over a budget deficit of about Sh18 billion, exposing the financial strain facing key programmes in the sector.
Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture on May 19, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said several critical initiatives, including preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), were grappling with significant funding shortfalls.
Kenya is set to co-host the 36th edition of Afcon alongside Uganda and Tanzania from June 19 to July 17, 2027. Other programmes affected by the funding gap include the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (Adak), the Kenya Academy of Sports and Sports Kenya.
