Kenya's government spent Sh4 billion to host the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir, including building a 10,000-capacity international-standard stadium in three months as part of 30+ major infrastructure projects in the North Eastern region. The initiative signals a deliberate state-led investment push in historically marginalized areas, with parallel upgrades to airports, roads, and affordable housing across Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera counties.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has urged Kenyans to turn up in numbers for the 2026 Madaraka Day Celebrations in Wajir County.
Speaking in Wajir on Sunday, Dr Omollo said it will be the seventh such national event to be held outside Nairobi, the first having been held in Embu, then Kericho before heading to Bungoma.
Kwale and Homa Bay held subsequent events with Kitui County hosting last year’s Madaraka Day celebrations.
