A professional earning Rs 2 lakh per month in Bengaluru, found herself to be truly helpless when her parents forced her to buy a house. Taking to the subreddit Personal Finance, the Reddit user shared she hails from a lower-middle class family. Her father struggled to pay her tuition fees. He was also debt-ridden. When she started out as an intern, earning Rs 25,000 per month, he left his job, leaving all the house responsibilities to her. Working in the IT sector, she earned Rs 2 lakh per month. However, she couldn’t save much as a lot of her salary was spent on various expenses. “I was paying his debt which kept on going for years. I had education loan that I also repaid and completed last year. I take care of house expense, electricity bill, insurances for all family, term insurance for myself…” she wrote. When she just started to save some money, her parents emotionally pressurised her to buy a home. They purchased a home without consulting her. Now on top of the other expenses, she has to pay Rs 80,000 per month as EMI. All her savings are getting spent as down payment. Despite earning a handsome salary, she is living paycheck to paycheck. “As of now I have48L House loan3L Father's loanAnd only 2L savings + some in stocks/MF..” she complained. She revealed the financial burden was draining her and causing her to have emotional breakdown everyday. Responding to the post, one Reddit user advised her to give some boundaries with her parents. They wrote: “Tell your parents you got Laid off. And now you are searching for Job, tell them to pay the EMI because you don't have money, exhaust their savings or they will make a down payment for a Sedan soon. Take your PAN CARD, Aadhar Card and whatever Certificates they have with you. See how they applied for the loan without you knowing and take counter measures, so that they don't take up any more loans. Don't sign on any papers they give. After 1-2 months tell them you got a job but you only have 80k - 1L /month salary, tell your parents you are not able to pay EMI and send around ₹10k/month home. when they ask for extra tell them you borrowed from friends. and tell your sister to Pay for the EMI your father took for her wedding. Hold everyone accountable in a non confronting way…” the comment read. Another advised her to switch jobs, sit down with her parents and establish boundaries.
