TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Cabinet Secretariat has announced that there will be ten people's schools in Jakarta in the near future. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf discussed the plan when they met on Saturday, May 30, 2026.According to the Cabinet Secretariat, the government has surveyed several schools in Jakarta that will become people's schools. "These include schools that were surveyed last month," as stated in the announcement on Sunday, May 31, 2026.The plan is for ten people's schools in Jakarta to accommodate 1,000 underprivileged students, including those who are not attending school, have dropped out, and are street children.The people's school program is also targeted to be implemented in other areas. The opening of public schools for the new academic year is set to begin in July 2026.The Ministry of Social Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, aims to complete the construction of 93 permanent public school buildings in phase II by June 2026. The buildings are expected to be used for teaching and learning activities in the upcoming academic year in July.Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf stated that the acceleration of construction is being carried out so that permanent people's schools can start operating soon. "The completion target for the construction at 93 people's school building sites has been sought and supported by the Minister of Public Works, so that July can be utilized for the 2026/2027 academic year," said Saifullah after a coordination meeting with the Minister of Public Works at the Ministry of Social Affairs office in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.In addition to phase II construction, the government has also begun the construction of permanent people's schools in phase III, divided into phases III A, III B, and III C based on land readiness and other administrative requirements.Saifullah said the government is also collaborating with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia to prepare digital learning facilities and internet networks in public schools. "Infrastructure for digital learning, Internet connection installations, and other matters related to digital learning are currently being prepared," he said.In the transition process from pilot people's schools to permanent ones, the Ministry of Social Affairs also plans to recruit more than 3,000 teachers and 5,000 education personnel this year.
