Guwahati: Amid continuing violence and highway disruptions, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls began in Manipur on Saturday.A day after a truck driver was killed and a police personnel injured in an ambush along National Highway-202, miscreants dug up a stretch of the highway at Shangkai village, further disrupting traffic movement. The attack took place near TM Kasom, around six kilometres from Shangkhai Kuki village, where security forces had been conducting operations to clear road blockades and facilitate the movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities to Ukhrul town.Truck drivers staged a protest in Imphal and refused to ply on the highway until adequate security arrangements were made."Despite security vehicles escorting the trucks, the driver was killed. President's Rule is in force in Manipur, yet we have been stranded here for several days," a truck driver said.Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met representatives of the All-Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union, led by general secretary Maimom Anil Meetei, along with family members of truck driver Nitish Kumar, who was killed in the ambush. The chief minister said the state government remained committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of truck drivers and transport workers. "An FIR has been registered and an investigation is underway," he said.Movement of trucks and other vehicles remained affected on the highway as both Kuki and Naga groups continued their bandh and economic blockade over the issue of missing persons following the May 13 violence. Tensions escalated after three church leaders belonging to the Thadou tribe were killed in an ambush on May 13. The incident triggered friction between the Naga and Kuki communities, with both sides accusing each other of abduction and illegal detention.
