Local residents and stakeholders have demanded immediate completion of Sivaganga SIPCOT Industrial Park infrastructure to pave the way for a proposed ₹5,300 crore tyre manufacturing plant.Work for setting up the industrial park across 769 acres in Arasur area near Sivaganga is under way. According to sources, 108 acres in Arasur, 599 acres in Aiyumagapatti, and 62 acres in Kalathur have been acquired for the project. The foundation for the project was laid in 2014, but work is yet to be completed. Only 108 acres acquired in Arasur area is ready. The plots in Aiyumagapatti and Kalathur areas are not completely ready. In order to provide access to the industrial park, a 30-metre-wide road is being constructed from Madurai-Thondi National Highway near Arasur and the suburbs. The tar road, spanning a distance of three km, has been laid for only 1.5 km where government land is located. The remaining road can be constructed only if 15.28 acres of land are acquired from private individuals, said the sources.Further, the SIPCOT administration has not paid ₹5 crore to the government through the District Collector for government land. Due to this, the industrial park SIPCOT administration has not handed over the land. Under these circumstances, an agreement was signed a few months ago to establish a private tyre manufacturing plant in the 599-acre area of Aiyumagpatti with an investment of ₹5,300 crores. It was stated that if the plant was established, it would provide employment opportunities for around 1,000 people.Asked about the impasse, Sivaganga SIPCOT officials said, “Funds will be allocated soon through the SIPCOT administration and will be paid to the District Collector. The tyre company is conducting preliminary inspection to set up the plant. Once they begin construction work, the industrial park will be ready. There is a total of three roads to reach the industrial park.”The district Revenue officials said the process of land acquisition from private individuals had not been completed. Funds would be allocated once permission was obtained from the government. Appropriate compensation would be provided to landowners. After that, the road would be constructed. All works were being expedited. Published - May 30, 2026 07:34 pm IST
