MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Saturday denied claims that the proposal allowing senators to participate and vote remotely was intended to benefit Vice President Sara Duterte in the impeachment trial or the senators facing possible arrest.
According to Cayetano, critics were wrongly linking the proposed amendment to the impeachment proceeding in the Senate.
“There is no truth that this amendment is related to the amendment of impeachment rules,” he said in his Facebook Live on Saturday.
“First of all, we have already adopted the impeachment rules. If we were to amend them, they would have to be published again, which would take time. What we are discussing now are the Senate rules,” he explained.
