The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has pulled back the curtain on the intense behind-the-scenes panic, high-stakes phone calls, and failed plots by state governors to block President Bola Tinubu from announcing the removal of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) subsidy.
AbdulRazaq made the disclosures on Friday evening at the Presidential Villa during a high-profile Sallah and third-anniversary dinner hosted by President Tinubu for the nation's governors.
In a candid address, the NGF Chairman revealed that when the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) first broke the news of the impending subsidy removal to him while he was in China, the governors went into "panic mode," expecting massive nationwide riots that never materialised due to the "audacity" of the President.
Recounting the dramatic buildup to the policy announcement, Governor AbdulRazaq explained how he and his colleagues initially believed the implementation of a subsidy-free regime was an impossibility that would tear the country apart.
