The Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Protection Association has welcomed the re-enumeration exercise to identify the beneficiaries of the agriculture loan waiver scheme announced by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. While welcoming the decision, association secretary Sundara Vimalanathan, in a statement on May 30, sought the conversion of existing loans as medium-term loans so that the borrowers could avail fresh loans for kuruvai cultivation.Claiming that it was not a new practice, he said during the AIADMK regime headed by Edappadi K. Palanisamy, farmers faced a piquant situation wherein they were not able to repay the loans because of crop loss due to Cyclone Gaja and other natural calamities. Hence, the then AIADMK converted the short-term agriculture loans to the tune of ₹410 crore, distributed through cooperative societies, as medium-term loans. Now, with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government rolling out a loan waiver scheme for the benefit of farmers, it should also consider inclusion of ₹410 crore medium-term loans pending re-payment by farmers as a component of the recent loan waiver scheme, he pleaded.Urging Mr. Vijay to release a White Paper on the financial condition of the State, as announced by him during his maiden address to the people as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the association sought the modification of the new scheme beneficial to all farmers irrespective of the category the government fixes them in.
