The World Health Organization (WHO) recognized the Baguio City government for its efforts to maintain public places free from tobacco and e-cigarette use and for developing tobacco control at the local level."Through consistent enforcement, sustained public education, and partnerships with civil society and academic institutions, Baguio City has reinforced smoke-free norms and increased public awareness of the harms of tobacco and emerging nicotine products," the WHO said in a statement.In 2025, Baguio City was bestowed the Bloomberg Philanthropies Award for Global Tobacco Control in recognition of its efforts to control tobacco use and protect public health.Baguio City was also a recipient of the Healthy Cities Award from the World Health Organization (WHO) under the category of "Sharing Clean Air: Committed to multi-sectoral implementation of smoke-free laws" in 2021.Meanwhile, four institutions in Vietnam also received a joint award for crafting policy reform in 2025 that strengthens existing e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products; introduces a mixed excise tax structure; and supports legislative and regulatory measures.These Vietnamese institutions are the Department of Legislation, Ministry of Health; the Health Policy and Strategy Institute; the Poison Control Center of Bach Mai Hospital; and the Tobacco Control Fund."Their collaboration highlights the value of legal expertise, evidence generation and strategic communication in countering industry tactics and protecting youth and future generations," the WHO said.The Philippines and Vietnam received the 2026 World No Tobacco Day Awards in the Western Pacific Region.Under Proclamation 183, the Philippines celebrates the National No Smoking Month every June to intensify public awareness regarding the harmful effects of smoking and to support the global "World No Tobacco Day" held every May 31. — VDV, GMA News
