Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela appeared before the Higher Education Portfolio Committee on Friday to explain his decision to place the National Student Financial Aid Scheme under administration.

Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela on Friday confirmed that he held a meeting with former board members of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) on April 13, where no minutes were taken and cellphones were confiscated.

Manamela said there was nothing untoward in the cellphones being confiscated and stored away in “white envelopes”.

“It was not the first time members of the board and everyone participating in that type of meeting had to leave their phones. There was nothing untoward.”

He said it had happened in about 20 prior meetings with the board, which was dissolved when he appointed an administrator on May 4.
