The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Saturday accepted wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s entry in the women’s 53kg category for the upcoming Asian Games selection trials, ending uncertainty over the weight class in which the Olympian would compete, PTI has reported. The development comes a day after the Supreme Court allowed Phogat to participate in the trials for the 2026 Asian Games, refusing to interfere with an earlier Delhi High Court order that had permitted her entry. The trials are being held at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi, where Phogat will now compete in the 53kg division as she attempts to secure a place in India’s wrestling contingent.Phogat’s return carries added significance as it comes less than two years after the dramatic setback she suffered at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. At the Olympics, Phogat became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. However, she was disqualified on the morning of her gold medal bout in the women’s 50kg category after being found 100 grams overweight during the weigh-in. The disqualification ended her medal hopes despite her victories in the earlier rounds, including a win over reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki. The incident triggered widespread debate in Indian sporting circles and led to an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, where Phogat sought a joint silver medal. The appeal was later dismissed.Following the Paris Olympics and a subsequent maternity break, Phogat had not competed in domestic tournaments, leading to questions over her eligibility for the Asian Games trials. The controversy intensified after the WFI introduced revised eligibility criteria for the selection trials. The rules restricted participation largely to medal winners from designated national competitions, effectively excluding Phogat. She challenged the decision before the Delhi High Court, which allowed her to participate and observed that the policy did not adequately account for athletes returning after maternity leave. The WFI subsequently moved the Supreme Court against the High Court order. However, the apex court permitted Phogat to compete in the trials while hearing the matter, clearing the way for her participation. The issue of her weight category remained unresolved until the federation accepted her entry in the 53kg division.A multiple-time Commonwealth Games and Asian Games medallist, Phogat is now seeking to revive her international career and secure a place in India’s squad for the next Asian Games after the disappointment of Paris.
