The Supreme Court on Friday allowed wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games, while hearing a plea filed by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) challenging the Delhi High Court’s earlier order permitting her participation.During the hearing, the top court observed that Phogat’s case stood on a different footing because of her contribution to Indian sports.Also Read: Messi set for sixth FIFA appearance as Argentina names World Cup squadAt the same time, the Supreme Court did not give a final ruling on the dispute. It sought responses from athletes concerned and other parties on WFI’s challenge to her participation in the trials.The matter has been listed for further hearing on June 1 (Monday), when the court is expected to take up the objections raised by the federation in detail.“If anybody else, it would have been on a different footing. She’s made the country proud”, the Court said, ANI reported.At the same time, the bench expressed concern over judicial intervention in sporting matters and criticised the way the Delhi High Court had dealt with the issue.The Supreme Court said it was troubled by the “manner and method” in which the High Court examined the case, cautioning that frequent and expedited court interference in sports administration could disrupt schedules and impact the larger sporting ecosystem.Addressing Phogat during the proceedings, the bench remarked, “You have been an excellent athlete. It can’t be like Courts will interfere in this manner and disrupt the entire schedule”, Justice PS Narasimha verbally remarked during the hearing.The matter came before the apex court after the WFI challenged the Delhi High Court’s decision allowing Phogat to take part in the Asian Games selection trials.
