Mike Wheeler says he barely paid it a second thought when a tenant paid him cash for rent. Now, police are using civil recovery laws to try to seize his property, after it emerged that said tenant was a criminal. Jake Kenny reports.
After exchanging pleasantries, a look of defeat washes over Mike Wheeler’s face.
He is standing in the driveway of his property in an industrial area of Woolston, Christchurch. In the distance behind him are shipping containers piled on top of each other. He watches the road in front of him while freight trucks come and go from the nearby Lyttelton Port, causing a slight rumble in the land beneath his feet as they pass.
His change of expression is prompted by a question from Stuff, asking him why we are here.
