A Kenyan High Court has temporarily halted a controversial plan by the United States government to establish an Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya following mounting public backlash and a legal challenge over fears of public health risks.

The court order, issued by Justice Patricia Nyaundi on Thursday, restrained the Kenyan government from admitting any persons exposed to or infected with Ebola under the proposed arrangement with the United States pending the determination of a lawsuit filed by the Katiba Institute, a Kenyan legal advocacy organisation.

The next hearing in the case has been fixed for June 2.

The planned 50-bed quarantine facility, expected to operate from an air force base in central Kenya, was designed to house American citizens exposed to Ebola in the ongoing outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
