It can be a real struggle trying to fall asleep in a hot, stuffy bedroom during a heatwave - but one A&E doctor has shared some clever cool bedroom hacks that could make the room up to eight degrees cooler16:02, 29 May 2026While the warm weather has its appeal, getting to sleep at night can prove genuinely challenging. Few things are more frustrating than a hot, stuffy bedroom when you're attempting to drift off. Fans might seem like the answer to cool yourself down, but they're largely ineffective when they're simply circulating warm air.‌Now one A&E doctor has shared some ingenious methods to cool your bedroom down before turning in for the night, claiming they could lower the room temperature by up to eight degrees - which sounds perfect during a heatwave. Dr Ahmed, who boasts 569,000 followers on TikTok, where he calls himself the "healthcare Gordon Ramsay", offered more details in a video on the social media platform.‌Starting the video, he promised to "tell you how to survive tonight". "Step one: take a large tray of ice and put it in the freezer," he said. "We'll come back to that later.‌"Step two: if your house has a loft, open the loft hatch. If the loft has a window, open the loft window. Warm air rises - it will rise up into the loft and outside your house, cooling down your top floor, where your bedroom probably is, by a lot."Step three: half an hour to an hour before bedtime, take two fans, put one against your bedroom window facing outside, blowing air outside. The other one in another room on the same floor on the window, blowing air in. In and out, in and out, create circulation in the house."Do this an hour before bed so the outside air is cooler and it will pull cool air inside your house, cooling everything down. Now, finishing with step one. Take that ice tray and put it in front of your fan.‌"Put some salt over it to lower down its melting temperature even more, and that fan will blow cool air from the ice all over you, chilling you down so much. Now you will sleep in a room that is at least six to eight degrees cooler than it was last night."Commenters were quick to chip in with their own suggestions, reports the Express. One said: "Also keep your windows and curtains shut during the day."Another added: "Open at night. Shut in the day. My south-facing bedroom is lovely and cool at the moment."‌A third remarked: "If it's 30 degrees outside, 25 degrees inside, opening the window just lets all the 30-degree heat in, warming the house. Windows shut to stop heat, curtains shut to stop [the] sun heating your home like a greenhouse.Content cannot be displayed without consent"At sunset, open windows wide, remain open until sunrise 6ish, then shut windows and curtains. Rinse and repeat throughout heatwave."Article continues belowYet another user offered a further suggestion. "I put a hot water bottle in the freezer and hug it when I go to bed," they said. One commenter even offered a perspective from the opposite side of the globe, where conditions are vastly different. "I'm in bed atm (at the moment) with my electric blanket on high, cosy bed socks and my thickest pjs," they said. "I only have two blankets on the bed, but both my blinds and my curtains are drawn."Trying to keep my house at minimum 15 degrees, but here in Australia the insulation in most houses is poor and aimed to make it cooler in summer, not warm in winter. Overnight tonight will get down to eight degrees, so not terribly cold. Enjoy your summer. I miss ours already."
