The Thanjavur district administration has sought a no-objection certificate (NoC) from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for taking up work to improve amenities at the Sri Brahadeeswarar temple, a world heritage monument.Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam told reporters here that the district administration had submitted to the ASI, through the State government, a list of 22 works or facilities required to be carried out at the Big Temple complex.Listing the works, she said the rampart abutting the moat remain damaged at several places and this work need to be given priority by the ASI. Apart from restoration of the rampart, scientific restoration of the vimanam and other structures, restoration of damaged inscriptions, safe disposal of abhishekam water, and improving the basic facilities for the visitors have been mentioned in the letter and the district administration would take up the work only after the ASI provides the NoC.Meanwhile, the stalemate over the removal of wild growth on the rampart walls ended on Friday following oral instructions from the office of the Thanjavur MP, S. Murasoli, to ASI staff to cooperate with the district administration.Sources at the office of the MP said instructions were issued to the ASI officials during the inspection visit of Mr. Murasoli to the World Heritage Monument on May 28 along with the Collector, hereditary trustee of Tanjore Palace Prince Babaji Rajah Bhonsle and others.Cleaning of VennarOn Friday, the district administration took up the cleaning of wild growth from a section of the Vennar river on the outskirts of Thanjavur by deploying earthmovers purchased by the Water Resources Department with the funds allocated for disaster management.
