Romania just expelled Russia’s consul general in Constanța and ordered the consulate shut down. The trigger: a Russian drone slammed into a residential apartment building in the Romanian city of Galați on May 29, injuring a mother and her 14-year-old son and displacing roughly 70 residents.

This is the most serious Russian military incident on Romanian soil since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.

What happened in Galați

The drone that hit the Galați apartment building was part of a massive Russian aerial offensive targeting Ukraine. Over 230 drones were launched in the attack wave. At least one of them didn’t stop at the Ukrainian border.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced the consulate closure and declared Russia’s consul general in Constanța persona non grata.
