Prices of goods included in Bulgaria’s so-called small consumer basket rose by 0.8% in May compared to the previous month, according to data released by the Confederation of Bulgarian Trade Unions.

Although the increase remains below 1%, trade union representatives warn that even limited monthly growth in the prices of essential products places additional pressure on household budgets over time. They argue that the cumulative effect of repeated increases gradually weakens consumers’ purchasing power, particularly for lower-income families that spend a larger share of their earnings on basic necessities.

The unions stressed that the trend requires closer oversight and more active measures aimed at limiting further increases in the prices of essential goods. They also called for stronger support mechanisms for vulnerable households facing rising living costs.

According to the organization, even modest price growth in staple products can have a noticeable long-term effect on everyday expenses, especially amid broader concerns about affordability and inflation pressures affecting consumers across the country.
