Russian President Vladimir Putin is losing the Ukraine conflict and will dismiss Romania strike as a casualty of war - but it carries a terrible message that may one day will hit us all11:33, 29 May 2026Updated 11:36, 29 May 2026Russia's strike on a Romania apartment will trigger another ratcheting up of pressure on NATO to arm up its eastern flank and marks a very dangerous step towards escalation. The Kremlin will entrench and obfuscate, rationalising what may have been an error as a casualty of war in Ukraine and dismiss it for its domestic audience- which is all it really considers. Except, although likely it was an error, it may be marked down by the Kremlin as another warning to NATO.Notably, however, Polish Undersecretary of State for Trade Michał Baranowski condemned the drone incursion as a “provocation” and not a mistake. He made it very clear that: “These are not mistakes. These are provocations,” adding: “It’s extremely serious. It is difficult to overstate the scale of this escalation.”It is the latest spill-over of a brutal full-scale invasion that Russia has inflicted for more than four years on Romania’s neighbour and which it knows it is probably losing. And it carries the clear message that the continent of Europe is no longer enjoying its post World War Two peacetime.Increasingly conflict in Ukraine is seeping over the border into neighbouring countries with espionage, cyber warfare assassinations and now this. Russian President Putin is desperate to demonstrate power to the US and exact as much as he can from any settlement on Ukraine. There have now been serious incursions by Russia into Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Finland as NATO’s eastern flank becomes ever-more at risk of attracting Russian aggression. But this impact on an apartment block in Romania’s eastern town of Galati, close to the Ukrainian, Moldovan border does mark a significant and bloody milestone.Russian drones have crossed Romania's border on a few occasions during the four-year war but it is the first time NATO citizens have been actually hurt. It also carries a message that increasingly the Ukraine war cannot be treated as a contained conflict, one that is far away from us - it is almost on our doorstep and only distance protects us.Romania's emergency services declared the drone's entire explosive payload detonated sparking a terrible blaze on the tenth floor of the apartment block. Two people received medical treatment after suffering abrasions and around 70 people were evacuated as the fire was put out. F-16 fighters and helicopters were scrambled.World leaders will breathe a sigh of relief the impact was not more serious but will be demanding to know how Russia could have made such a dumb mistake. It could have been so much worse and it is difficult to imagine Russia will face serious consequences other than to attract an even greater arms race across NATO countries. The only consequence may be covert action against Russia carrying a message and a threat to Putin but that falls below the threshold for all-out war. This is almost certainly already underway so will not serve as a significant warning to Putin.Shockingly poor discipline, plummeting morale, a lack of training and corruption have infected Russia from bottom to top as it becomes increasingly desperate to exert pressure on Ukraine. This latest bungle, whether deliberate or otherwise, will pile pressure on NATO to accelerate the transfer of anti-drone and missile technology into eastern Europe in a bid to contain Kremlin aggression.Inside the Kremlin, the war-planners and military leaders will deflect blame and some poor air force official will doubtless face discipline, perhaps even fall out of a window. But Russian leader Vladimir Putin will look for an advantage out of the incident, the latest in a litany of bloody notches in his murderous political career. He will likely regard it as some sort of flex, another threat, a way of nudging NATO as a warning.Article continues belowEuropean Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned Russia's "war of aggression,” saying it had “crossed yet another line." NATO condemned "Russia's recklessness" but this will have no effect on Putin who only respects consequences and there will be none except to bolster NATO against Russia.
