Two officers from Alexandra Road Police Station were arrested on corruption charges.

Two Pietermaritzburg police officers were arrested after allegedly taking R1,000 from an assault suspect before later attempting to return the money for the corruption case against them to be withdrawn.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said members of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit arrested the officers, aged 41 and 42, on Thursday.

He said the two officers from Alexandra Road Police Station accompanied a complainant in the common assault case to the workplace of the suspect.

“The suspect was placed under arrest, and the arresting officers are alleged to have requested R1,000 bail money from the suspect. The suspect did not have cash on him; arrangements were made with the employer to pay the requested amount, with an agreement that the employer would deduct the money from his salary.”
