IOL announced on Friday that it has secured a R200 million investment from shareholders to drive a bold national expansion strategy, establishing the company as one of South Africa's largest and most influential digital publishers.

IOL has operated as an independent, standalone digital publisher since 2014, with its own ownership structure, editorial leadership, and executive team — separate from Independent Media.

The two organisations share a name in the public consciousness, but have for more than a decade been different companies with different mandates, different leadership, and different futures.

As part of this next chapter, IOL has formally served notice to Independent Media that its historic content partnership agreement will be terminated.

The agreement, which allowed IOL to draw on Independent Media’s print content, served its purpose during an earlier phase of the business.
