British University Vietnam (BUV) has been featured in a global report by Pearson and Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a case study for its approach to AI governance in higher education through the university's AI Assessment Scale framework.
The recognition comes as universities worldwide face growing pressure to adapt teaching and assessment models to the rapid rise of generative AI technologies.According to the Pearson and AWS report on workforce readiness in the AI era, employers are encountering a widening gap between university training and labor market expectations. The report found that 53% of businesses struggle to recruit employees with suitable AI skills, while only 28% believe higher education institutions are adapting quickly enough to technological change. Meanwhile, just 14% of graduates surveyed said they felt confident applying AI tools in real workplace settings. The report argues that AI readiness extends beyond familiarity with tools such as ChatGPT. Instead, graduates are increasingly expected to combine technical understanding with critical thinking, adaptability, communication skills, and awareness of ethical issues surrounding AI systems.Students are increasingly expected to combine AI literacy with critical thinking and adaptability.BUV was highlighted in the report for its AI Assessment Scale (AIAS), a framework developed by the university's academic team to classify permitted levels of AI usage in assessments. The system was co-developed by Associate Professor Mike Perkins, head of BUV's Center for Research and Innovation.Speaking about the framework, Perkins said the university chose not to prohibit generative AI tools when they began rapidly entering classrooms worldwide in 2023."Readiness is about moving beyond pretending students are not using AI," he said. "It is about redefining what assessment means in the age of generative AI."Under the AIAS model, lecturers can specify different levels of AI usage for assignments, ranging from no AI use to full AI integration, depending on intended learning outcomes.According to the Pearson and AWS report, many universities globally still lack clear guidance for students and faculty regarding AI usage in academic settings.BUV said the framework was implemented across the university alongside faculty training, guidance materials, and assessment templates. The university added that the model has since been referenced or adopted by more than 350 educational institutions worldwide and translated into more than 30 languages.
