A notorious incident on Oxford Street a few weeks before Christmas led to a bitter argument between pop star Olly Murs and Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan07:07, 29 May 2026Fans of Olly Murs can watch the star, who first rose to prominence on The X Factor back in 2009, tackle a gruelling 400km endurance challenge as part of Soccer Aid for UNICEF's 20th anniversary.Spanning five demanding days, Olly travels from Manchester to London across brutal terrain, conquering steep ascents, vast distances and stretches of open water. This is far from his first charitable endeavour, and previously Olly has represented England in Soccer Aid's annual charity fixture at Old Trafford.Amongst his numerous other philanthropic efforts, Olly also completed a sponsored climb of mountain peaks in the Lake District in tribute to his friend and The Xtra Factor colleague, Caroline Flack.Yet despite releasing five chart-topping albums and featuring in numerous television programmes, there remains one notorious incident Olly simply cannot escape. He revealed to the i newspaper that he still believes he was unfairly judged following the infamous "Selfridges Panic", which was triggered by a straightforward tweet. "What annoyed me was that it was made to look like I just went into Selfridges and decided to cause mayhem," he said.Olly elaborated: "I was just reacting off the back of the drama with hundreds of other people. I remember Piers Morgan coming for me. I just remember thinking, this is really bizarre because I'm in Selfridges right now in a back cupboard, really scared. I have never felt that scared." The controversy erupted in November 2017, when Olly posted an alarmed Tweet to his millions of followers, asserting that he'd encountered gunfire while shopping in upmarket department store Selfridges on London's Oxford Street."F**k everyone get out of Selfridges now gun shots!! I'm inside," he posted. "Really not sure what's happened! I'm in the back office... but people screaming and running towards exits!"He continued with a subsequent message stating: "So many different stories flying around just hope everyone is safe," he added. Metropolitan Police officers examining the claims discovered no evidence of gunfire and consequently released a statement confirming that there was "no evidence of any shots fired."By this point, however, the store had been cleared as a precautionary measure. BGT judge Piers Morgan criticised Olly, declaring: "Stop tweeting mate. Nothing happened."But Olly stood firm, responding: "Listen Piers! I was shopping and then all of sudden the whole place went mad, I mean crazy people running and screaming towards exits."We found a small office to hide to which loads of staff and people were saying there was shots fired. If you was there [sic] you'd have understood mate."Piers accused Olly of generating unnecessary alarm by tweeting "false information," cautioning Olly to exercise greater care regarding his social media activity. "No you listen Piers," Olly fired back, "your comments are unfair mate. It's easy to say now it was nothing but in a state of shock and panic I was trying to make people aware of what was happening. Which I was led to believe by staff and customers that someone was shooting."He added: "Despite what actually happened I'm so glad it was nothing serious and I hope everyone got home safely."As the incident occurred during Black Friday sales and the festive shopping period, Oxford Street and Regent Street were heaving with shoppers. Both Oxford Circus and Bond Street stations were shut down following the incident, which had actually been a physical altercation on one of the platforms at Oxford Circus.Scores of people evacuated the station in terror and during the resulting chaos, 16 individuals sustained injuries, including eight requiring hospital attention for minor wounds and one suffering a severe leg injury.Article continues belowDespite the chaos, the scheduled Royal Variety Performance at the neighbouring London Palladium, presented by Miranda Hart and attended by the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, proceeded as intended.Olly Murs: Steps into the Unknown for Soccer Aid broadcasts this evening (Friday, May 29) at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
