A presidential aspirant on the platform of Accord, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, on Thursday, alleged that Nigeria is gradually sliding back into what he described as the “dark days” of the military regime of the late Gen Sani Abacha, accusing powerful political interests of plotting to cripple opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Olawepo-Hashim, in a statement issued and made available to The PUNCH, ahead of the Accord presidential primaries scheduled for May 30, claimed that influential figures were working behind the scenes to weaken opposition platforms and frustrate the emergence of credible challengers to the ruling establishment.

“Nigeria is being dragged back to the Abacha years,” he declared.

The presidential hopeful accused a top chieftain within the Accord of allegedly orchestrating internal moves aimed at destabilising the party and preventing it from fielding a presidential candidate.

According to him, the unfolding political situation bears similarities to the era of Abacha, when political parties allegedly operated under a single power structure.
