TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto said he has instructed schools across all levels in Indonesia to expand the teaching of French as part of efforts to strengthen educational cooperation with France.Prabowo made the statement during bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Thursday local time.“In the field of education, we want to further strengthen cooperation. I have now instructed that schools across all levels in Indonesia should teach the French language, considering future global developments,” Prabowo said, as monitored online through the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel in Jakarta on Thursday.According to Prabowo, mastering foreign languages, including French, is important to prepare younger generations for an increasingly dynamic global environment, especially as relations between Indonesia and France continue to deepen across various sectors. The president said cooperation between the two countries in science and technology had continued to show positive progress. He also stressed the importance of Indonesia and France playing a role in maintaining global stability amid rising international uncertainty.Prabowo further noted that advances in science and technology have made the world more interconnected, meaning that war and conflict would not benefit any country. On the occasion, Prabowo also said Indonesia and France shared similar positions on several international issues. He expressed appreciation for Macron’s support, which he said had contributed to the close bilateral relations between the two countries.“In several respects, Indonesia and France share the same stance, and our bilateral relations are currently very strong. This is inseparable from the direct support of President Macron,” Prabowo said.Prabowo’s visit to France this week was made at the invitation of Macron after a previously scheduled visit had been postponed.Several issues are expected to be discussed during the bilateral meeting, including cooperation in defense, clean energy, education, research, and the implementation of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA).Read: Prabowo: Indonesia, France Back Palestinian Two-State Solution
