There is rising political tension in Kano State as supporters and stakeholders await the official unveiling of the Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate by the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, amid strong indications that a consensus nominee has already emerged.

The expected announcement, billed for today, follows several days of closed-door engagements within the movement and consultations with key political actors, with credible sources suggesting that the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, has been pencilled in as the preferred candidate.

Gwarzo stepped down as deputy governor in March following a political crisis that reportedly led to an impeachment notice from the state House of Assembly, following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress after dumping the New Nigeria People’s Party.

Sources familiar with the development told The PUNCH that the final decision was reached after marathon internal deliberations within the Kwankwasiyya political structure, which also reviewed the candidature of former All Progressives Congress governorship flag bearer in the 2023 election, Dr Nasiru Gawuna.
