For a country with just over three million people, Uruguay continue to command extraordinary respect in world football. Just as many past winners of the World Cup, La Celeste carry a weight of history and pedigree unmatched by most nations worldwide.

The South American giants were the inaugural hosts and winners of the FIFA World Cup in 1930 and followed it with another historic triumph in 1950, producing one of football’s greatest upsets by defeating Brazil inside the famous Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Those achievements established Uruguay as one of football’s original superpowers.

Yet, despite their immense history and reputation for producing elite talents, Uruguay have not lifted the World Cup trophy in over seven decades.
