Gisborne's Mayor hopes funding to upgrade State Highway 2 through the Waioweka Gorge in Budget 2026 will mean the flood-prone stretch of road will not have to close as much.

The government announced $75 million for slope stabilisation, rockfall protection, and drainage improvements between Ōpōtiki and Matawai in the Eastern Bay of Plenty on Thursday as part of a $400m state highway resilience projects package.

Local Government New Zealand president and Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz said the upgrades would make the road more reliable for freight, emergency services, tourism, and everyday travel.
