A major $400 million investment has been set aside for state highway resilience projects to strengthen weak points and keep critical transport routes open before severe weather causes roads to fail.
The multi-million-dollar package, announced as part of Budget 2026, aims to improve New Zealand’s infrastructure protection, hazard mapping, emergency management, and financial preparedness.
Infrastructure and Transport Minister Chris Bishop says funding has been earmarked for corridors that communities, freight operators, and tourists rely on every day.
“We know where many of the weak points on the network are,” Bishop says. “This investment allows us to strengthen them before roads fail, rather than repeatedly paying to rebuild them afterwards.”
