The family of 20-year-old Deshawn Joseph is demanding answers after he was crushed to death by a garbage truck on Tuesday night.Joseph, a sanitation worker, died when the vehicle rolled over his body at around 9.15pm.He was on duty at Kelly Village, Caroni, at the time of the incident.Surveillance camera footage showed Joseph standing at the back of the truck as it reversed into Ramnath Street. A vehicle was parked on the roadway.Joseph, whose girlfriend is pregnant with their first child, jumped off the truck and was walking toward a garbage bag when he was struck and fell to the ground.The 43-year-old driver told police that he was reversing into the street, trying to avoid hitting the parked on the left side. The driver said he was unable to see behind the truck.In an interview with Crime Watch host Ian Alleyne, the driver said he had worked with Joseph for about seven months and they had a good relationship.The driver said Joseph, of Springvale in Claxton Bay, had accompanied him to the Chaguanas Market, although he was not supposed to work until later that night.“He say he will come along for a drive and he sat down and lime with me at the market. If you see the video, you will see he jumped out the truck while it was reversing. You not supposed to come off while it reversing,” he said.The driver said he had been driving truck for a long time and he was saddened by the accident. He said Joseph was a “good boy” and asked his relatives to understand.“I am being threatened and I cannot even stay in my home. It was an accident,” he said.Police confirmed that Joseph’s relatives have called for a thorough investigation.Joseph’s 19-year-old girlfriend, who is four months pregnant was also left traumatized.Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has also extended condolences to Joseph’s family, saying it was “truly heartbreaking that a young man went out to earn an honest living to care for his family and never returned home”In a social media post on Thursday, Persad-Bissessar said Joseph tragically lost his life in a freak accident on Tuesday night.“He leaves behind a grieving family, including his girlfriend who is four months pregnant with their child. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may God grant strength, comfort and healing to his loved ones during this painful time of grief,” she said.
