New Delhi: American Airlines Group plans to double the workforce at its India technology hub in Hyderabad to around 800 employees by early next year, according to sources familiar with the development. The expansion reflects a growing trend among multinational companies increasing investments in India’s global capability centers (GCCs) to tap into the country’s skilled technology talent and manage rising operational costs elsewhere. Recently, Southwest Airlines also announced plans to expand its Hyderabad GCC to nearly 1,000 employees over the next few years.Major global corporations including JPMorgan Chase, Walmart, McDonald’s, Nvidia and Eli Lilly have strengthened their technology operations in India, where GCCs are increasingly taking on strategic functions such as engineering, research and development, cybersecurity, finance and operations.American Airlines established its Hyderabad technology hub in 2024 and currently employs about 400 professionals working in software engineering, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, the sources said. The airline confirmed that hiring efforts will continue, though it did not disclose specific workforce targets. It described the Hyderabad facility as part of its wider global technology network operating alongside teams in Fort Worth and Phoenix in the United States. The company said its teams collaborate to digitize processes, introduce new tools that improve operational efficiency and customer experience, and strengthen the airline’s resilience.American Airlines also noted that it has increased both technology investments and U.S.-based IT staffing every year since 2021.According to a 2026 Nasscom-Zinnov report, India is now the world’s largest GCC hub, with more than 2,100 centers employing around 2.36 million people and generating nearly $100 billion in revenue.
