Brighton & Hove Albion have made the correct decision in parting company with Solly March. All good things come to an end. March ranks as one of the club’s great servants, but they have made the right call to end a partnership spanning 15 years.March confirmed in an open letter to fans, posted on the club’s channels on Tuesday evening, that he is leaving when his current deal expires in June. The club have decided against triggering an option year in his contract. The cold facts are these. March has made 12 league appearances over the best part of three seasons because of two anterior cruciate knee ligament injuries (ACL). Only one of those appearances has been as a starter. The return to action in March of the 31-year-old, after 11 months out, was testimony to his determination in recovering from the “toughest challenge” he has faced. “Pulling the shirt on again meant everything to me,” March also wrote in the letter to supporters.Sadly though, that four-minute comeback as a late substitute in a 2-1 home win against Nottingham Forest has been followed by other minor setbacks limiting his involvement to four appearances totaling 34 minutes in Brighton’s second successive eighth-placed finish under Fabian Hurzeler — which has earned them a place this time in the Europa Conference League.March reached 300 appearances overall when Hurzeler brought him off the bench in the second half of Sunday’s closing 3-0 defeat by Manchester United at the Amex Stadium. Hurzeler’s side were already 3-0 down when March was introduced. That 31 minutes of game time exceeded the number of minutes he had spent on the pitch over the past year.
