Rinkēvičs also called for a larger defence share in the next MFF

RIGA, Latvia – The EU should consider providing additional financial support to frontline regions affected by drone incursions linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine, Latvia’s president told Euractiv, warning that the growing security threat is disrupting daily life and damaging local economies along NATO’s eastern flank.

Edgars Rinkēvičs said repeated air alerts in eastern Latvia in recent weeks, including disruptions to school exams and cancellations in the hospitality sector, showed how defence and civilian resilience were becoming intertwined.

“Local economies are affected, local people are affected. They are actually scared, and for a very good reason,” he said in an interview.
