Outgoing National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik said on Thursday that the parliament “restored constitutional order” and upheld democracy by ending the short-lived martial law imposition by former President Yoon Suk Yeol in December 2024.
“We defended democracy and restored constitutional order against the [...] martial law declaration,” Woo said in a press conference at the National Assembly in Yeouido, western Seoul, two days before his two-year term ends, as he shared his accomplishments as the head of the legislative branch during a tumultuous period.

“During a national crisis, the National Assembly took the lead in restoring constitutional order, which increased trust in the Assembly both domestically and internationally. It marked a meaningful change in its history, and I personally found [the feat] deeply rewarding.”
