Both Wicked press tours turned Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s relationship into an object of cultural fascination for several reasons, most of them deeply amusing. But there’s one viral moment Erivo would like to revisit: when she was likened to Grande’s bodyguard after defending her from a fan in Singapore. The jokes may have seemed innocuous, but in a Variety interview, Erivo noted the racial dynamics at play. “I think that we haven’t really come to terms with the insidious nature of how we view Black women,” she said.
