OpenAI and 26 other major technology companies have signed a joint agreement to fight the spread of AI-generated misinformation during elections. The Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections was signed on February 16, 2024, during the Munich Security Conference, bringing together some of the most powerful names in tech under a single, if voluntary, banner.

The signatories include Meta, Google, and Microsoft, alongside OpenAI. With more than 50 nations holding elections in 2024, the timing is less “proactive” and more “the house is already on fire, let’s agree to own fire extinguishers.”

What the accord actually commits to

The participating companies pledged to deploy detection tools designed to identify AI-generated deceptive content. They also committed to promoting transparency around AI-generated material and launching educational campaigns aimed at helping voters distinguish real information from synthetic fakes.

The accord is voluntary. There are no binding penalties for failing to meet its commitments.
