Thousands of devotees took part in the ‘Aatril Kambam Vidum Vizha’ programme as part of the 21-day Vaikasi festival at Sri Mariamman Temple.The holy Kambam (a sacred pole) was taken out of the temple and carried in a decorated procession to the Amaravathi River. The Kambam, as per the rituals, was subsequently immersed in the river in the presence of devotees, who thronged from different parts of the district. Special pujas were performed to Sri Mariamman.The city wore a festive look on the occasion of the festival. Traditional folk performances such as oyilattam, mayilattam and others marked the festival.
