The supply of gas through pipelines to households and industries in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts is yet to see significant progress, despite meetings held in this regard in March.Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Tourism Suresh Gopi reviewed the progress and pending issues related to the Kochi–Koottanad–Bangalore–Mangalore Natural Gas Pipeline project of GAIL, which involves a revised project cost of about ₹5,909 crore and has a physical progress of around 96.6%. He also reviewed the Irugur–Devanagonthi Multi Product Pipeline project of BPCL, which has a revised project cost of about ₹1,732 crore and a physical progress of around 82.6%, and the CGD Project of BPCL for Erode and the Nilgiris districts at ₹ 3,685 crore with physical progress of around 44.6%.Coimbatore district Collector Pavankumar Giriyappanavar told The Hindu that almost 90% of the IDPL gas pipeline works (Irugur -Devenagonthi) are completed in Coimbatore district.With the West Asia war, industries, especially the MSMEs in Coimbatore district and restaurants and eateries are hit severely because of shortage and high cost of LPG. MSMEs use LPG for several industrial applications and are awaiting supply through pipelines.An MSME unit owner said though a lot of details were shared regarding the project and assurances were given at the meeting chaired by the district Collector of Coimbatore in March, there is not much progress. “We hear that the hub at Kalapatti has been activated and some of the industries in that area are getting LPG through pipeline. But, most of the industries do not have pipeline connectivity yet. We were told then that the project will see significant coverage in the district in six months.
