Mallory Swanson is returning to the U.S. women’s national team for the first time since August 2024. The Chicago Stars forward will reunite with Sophia Wilson and Trinity Rodman, collectively referred to as “Triple Espresso,” for a pair of friendlies at Brazil next month. The fixtures, in São Paulo and Fortaleza on June 6 and 9, could mark the first time Swanson, Wilson and Rodman play together since the USWNT’s gold-medal victory over Brazil at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Swanson scored the lone goal for the U.S. to secure the gold. Shortly after, Wilson and Swanson went on maternity leave and have made their way back to playing this year.Emma Hayes’ 26-player roster also features four more changes from the group that played three matches against Japan last month, adding goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn, defender Tara Rudd and midfielders Croix Bethune and Riley Jackson.Sam Coffey is a notable absence from the U.S. midfield as the Manchester City player recovers from minor knee surgery. So is the exclusion of Chelsea center back Naomi Girma, who has not played for the London club since April and has been dealing with a calf injury. Catarina Macario, who signed with the San Diego Wave from Chelsea and was the USWNT’s top goal scorer last year, is out with a heel injury.USWNT June roster in fullGoalkeepers (3): Claudia Dickey (Seattle Reign FC; 10 international appearances), Mandy McGlynn (Utah Royals; 5), Phallon Tullis-Joyce (Manchester United, ENG; 7)Defenders (8): Tierna Davidson (Gotham FC; 69 international appearances/3 goals), Emily Fox (Arsenal FC, ENG; 76/1), Avery Patterson (Houston Dash; 12/1), Lilly Reale (Gotham FC; 9/0), Tara Rudd (Washington Spirit; 12/0), Emily Sonnett (Gotham FC; 116/2), Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC; 10/0), Kennedy Wesley (San Diego Wave FC; 6/1)Midfielders (8): Croix Bethune (Kansas City Current; 7/1), Lindsey Heaps (OL Lyonnes, FRA; 176/40), Claire Hutton (Bay FC; 18/1), Riley Jackson (North Carolina Courage; 1/0), Rose Lavelle (Gotham FC; 120/29), Olivia Moultrie (Portland Thorns FC; 17/5), Jaedyn Shaw (Gotham FC; 36/10), Lily Yohannes (OL Lyonnes, FRA; 18/1)Forwards (7): Michelle Cooper (Kansas City Current; 12/1), Trinity Rodman (Washington Spirit; 55/13), Emma Sears (Racing Louisville FC; 19/6), Ally Sentnor (Kansas City Current; 21/7), Mallory Swanson (Chicago Stars; 103/38), Alyssa Thompson (Chelsea FC, ENG; 31/4), Sophia Wilson (Portland Thorns FC; 61/24)Will Swanson and ‘Triple Espresso’ pick up where they left off?Whether they will all play together at the same time against Brazil, it’s difficult to overstate the magnitude of Swanson, Wilson and Rodman reuniting in a national team camp for the first time in nearly two years. The attacking trio was not only lethal in the Paris Games, but also consistent, combining for 10 goals — more than any other nation — out of 12 total for the U.S. Four of those, along with two assists, belonged to Swanson. The Chicago Stars forward returned to play in the NWSL two weeks ago. In her second game, she scored her first goal since giving birth to her daughter, Josie, in November. She’s played just shy of an hour across two fixtures for the Stars and is unlikely to play much more than that for the U.S., but Swanson’s presence adds a new level of depth down the U.S. flank that most of the players in Hayes’ core group are yet to be exposed to. If and when Swanson returns to full form, she will be in direct competition with Alyssa Thompson, who has risen up the ranks of the USWNT front line in Swanson’s absence.Swanson also brings a wealth of experience with her 103 caps, putting her just behind Sonnett (116), Lavelle (120) and Heaps (176) as a veteran player. From a culture standpoint, expect the standards and expectations to increase.Despite impressive club form, Ashley Sanchez left off rosterAs is typically the case, the players who did not make the USWNT roster are just as noteworthy as those who did. North Carolina Courage midfielder Ashley Sanchez has been stellar in the NWSL, second in the Golden Boot race with seven goals and an assist, and regularly putting on class performances.Sanchez, 27, has not featured with the USWNT since October 2024. As the window narrows for players who’ve gone some time without a camp invitation, June felt like a chance for Hayes to assess another crafty, playmaking midfielder with an appetite for goal — especially as Lavelle deals with a hamstring issue that has kept her out of action with Gotham FC for the past few weeks.Hayes has maintained an open mind with other players, though. Bethune missed out on the last two national team camps but returns for the Brazil matches and will offer a brand of creativity on the ball similar to Sanchez and Lavelle. Jackson is perhaps the biggest surprise invite; at 20 years old with one cap, she is still eligible for the U-23 roster, which will also be traveling to Brazil with the senior team. A club teammate of Sanchez’s with the No. 7-ranked Courage, Jackson has also had a bright start to her NWSL season. Hayes is meticulous about players’ individual development and might desire Jackson’s exposure to older USWNT midfielders like Heaps and Lavelle for this camp.Girma and Macario miss critical competition window with ongoing injuriesThey may not have a pithy name, but Girma and Macario have been just as central as “Triple Espresso” to the USWNT’s success — and both have been dealing with injuries.Girma’s appearances with the USWNT have been more sporadic than Macario’s. The Chelsea defender was named to Hayes’ last two rosters for the SheBelieves Cup and trio of Japan friendlies. She subbed off at halftime of the U.S.’s final match against Colombia in March, and then played two of their three matches against Japan last month, scoring a goal in the team’s final fixture on April 17. Her last game with Chelsea was April 6, an FA Cup match against Tottenham.Macario has yet to play for club or country this calendar year. The forward’s last cap came Dec. 1 against Italy; two matches with Chelsea, her former club, followed on Dec. 7 and 10, but since signing with the Wave in March, Macario still appears to be managing a heel injury. When they’re healthy, Girma and Macario are essentially irreplaceable, but as their injuries continue to nag, Hayes must explore replacements.
