A 65-year-old person, who was diagnosed with Leptospirosis after getting admitted to the Apollo hospital in Visakhapatnam with fever, headache, stomach pain, severe body aches and extreme weakness for a week, has been saved by a team of doctors through Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE).Leptospirosis, a serious bacterial infection, had entered the patient’s body through a minor cut.The patient developed jaundice, internal lung bleeding, kidney and liver failure, low platelet count and breathing difficulties, requiring ventilator support. Despite antibiotics and intensive care, his condition worsened with irregular heart rhythm and dangerously low blood pressure.Doctors then initiated the TPE process, which brought remarkable improvement after two sessions. His blood pressure stabilised, jaundice reduced, platelet count improved, and he was eventually removed from ventilator support before being discharged. Published - May 27, 2026 07:08 pm IST
