Smoke was spotted coming out of an escalator at the Ambelokipi Athens Metro station in the city center but the operation of the station or the subway service was not affected, authorities said Wednesday.
The Fire Service sent six firefighters and two fire engines to the spot around 2.30 pm. No injuries were reported and the cause of the smoke was not immediately known.
The affected escalator, outside the underground section of the station on the Soutsou Street exit, was shut down pending an inspection.
