New Left leader Gabriel Sakellaridis on Wednesday criticized former prime minister Alexis Tsipras’ new political party, arguing that its launch presentation lacked concrete policy proposals and exposed deep ideological inconsistencies.
Speaking to Action 24 television, Sakellaridis said Tsipras’ Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) appeared to target multiple audiences while failing to present clear positions.
“Yesterday we did not hear positions, only general declarations. We did not hear proposals,” Sakellaridis said, adding that the party’s “seven pillars” amounted to little more than “headlines.”
He also asserted that Tsipras showed no substantial break from his past political stance, arguing that his messaging awkwardly spanned both left- and right-leaning ideas. “That creates an internal inconsistency,” Sakellaridis said. “He does not have the credibility needed to inspire trust again.”
The New Left leader questioned the symbolism of the party’s name, ELAS, noting it seemed designed to appeal broadly without a clear ideological foundation. He also suggested Tsipras could easily shift his political direction over time.
