Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis on Wednesday sharply criticized former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ new political venture, following the launch of the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) on Tuesday.
Marinakis said Tsipras’ move amounted to political rebranding rather than renewal, arguing that the former SYRIZA leader had simply changed “the packaging” without delivering any substantive shift in direction.
“The rhetoric is a reproduction of the most divisive and backward-looking slogans of yesteryear,” Marinakis said in comments broadcast on the television station Open.
He added that Tsipras was “investing in going backward,” contrasting this approach with the government’s alleged focus on forward-looking policies aimed at addressing domestic and European challenges. Political leaders, he said, would ultimately be judged by voters.
Marinakis also reiterated that securing an absolute majority in the next national election, set for 2027, remains the sole objective for the center-right government of New Democracy.
