CARACAS: Venezuela freed eight army officers on Tuesday jailed on charges of plotting to overthrow former president Nicolas Maduro, the latest political prisoners to walk free after the autocratic leader was toppled.

Venezuela has released hundreds of political prisoners since US forces captured Maduro in a stunning raid on the capital Caracas in January.

The eight officers are linked to Venezuela’s “Paratrooper Case,” in which they were accused in 2017 of inciting a coup against Maduro.

General Raul Baduel, a former close aide to Maduro’s predecessor, socialist firebrand Hugo Chavez, was one of those jailed.

Baduel died behind bars in 2021.
