Rappa: Yankee Ninpū Chō creator Eiji Hashimoto has announced that the manga will temporarily go on hiatus after he was diagnosed with sudden sensorineural hearing loss, according to a report by Anime News Network.Hashimoto shared the update through his X account, where he explained that the series would pause for two weeks while he focuses on recovery. He also confirmed that the manga’s release pattern will temporarily shift from its regular schedule to one new chapter every three weeks.In his statement, Hashimoto said he developed sudden deafness last month due to overwork. The condition reportedly caused temporary hearing loss in his right ear and led to additional symptoms including dizziness, vomiting and difficulty standing.The manga artist noted that he is currently recovering, though some symptoms still persist. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a serious medical condition that can occur unexpectedly and often requires immediate treatment.Hashimoto launched Rappa: Yankee Ninpū Chō in Akita Publishing’s Shōnen Champion magazine in September 2024. The manga combines delinquent “yankee” culture with ninja action themes, giving it a distinctive place among modern shonen titles.Akita Publishing released the manga’s seventh compiled volume on March 6, while the eighth volume is scheduled to ship on June 8.Although the series is still relatively new, it has gained attention for its energetic action sequences and stylized artwork.Before launching Rappa: Yankee Ninpū Chō, Hashimoto was widely known for his work on Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem, which he created alongside writer Shinya Umemura.The historical action manga debuted in Tokuma Shoten’s Monthly Comic Zenon magazine in 2010 and ran for more than a decade. The series entered its final arc with volume 32 in January 2022 before concluding in April 2023.According to Anime News Network, Hashimoto also teased a new one-shot connected to the Chiruran franchise on X late last year.The Chiruran franchise has expanded beyond manga over the years. A stage play adaptation was performed in April 2017, while a live-action adaptation is set to air on Japan’s TBS channel as a special project and will also stream on the U-NEXT platform as a series.Hashimoto and Umemura additionally launched a comedy spinoff titled Chiruran Nibun no Ichi in 2016. The spinoff later received a short-form anime adaptation, which streamed internationally on Crunchyroll under the title Chiruran 1/2.
