Sir, – Full points are due to Tim Buckley on his views about the oft-maligned Leaving Certificate exam (“I sat the Leaving Cert three times and I owe a lot to the experience”, Letters, May 23rd).There is no better test for hard work, intelligence and performance under pressure than filling a blank answer book within a set time. I was not a brilliant student in 1969. But I did work hard for the three honours and two passes.Thirty-eight years on, I started studying for a law degree. Although there may be major differences in second- and third-level education models, I found that the exact same basics still applied.Hard work, application and the ability to translate these efforts cogently onto those same blank pages. – Yours, etc,LARRY DUNNE,Rosslare,Co Wexford.
