Sir,- One sympathises with John Naughton, having endured disruptive passengers on the long flight to Malta, but his proposal suggests he is a patient if infrequent flyer. If gate staff have to breathalyse more than 200 passengers, at say 60 seconds per test, boarding a Ryanair 737 would take almost four hours, which by neat symmetry is the flying time between Dublin and Valletta. I fear it’s an impractical solution. The issue has to be tackled at the point of supply. If we have to allow airport bars to serve alcohol, and I’m far from convinced we do, it should be a simple matter to enforce a set number of alcoholic drinks per passenger per day.Every passenger being required to submit a passport or boarding pass to get an alcoholic drink and a central database for all hostelries within the airport complex ensuring compliance is surely possible. – Yours, etc,BRIAN HUGHES,Cabinteely,Dublin 18.[ Airline passengers should be breathalysedOpens in new window ]
