Welcome to this week’s The State We’re In. Today, I’d like to take you to Birmingham. Specifically, the city’s Jobcentre Plus (JCP) at Centennial House.

Security guards are the first people you see as you enter. Once inside, there are desktop computers for job seekers (known as clients to staff here) to use, blue plastic sofas serve as a waiting area and work coaches sit in numbered booths which line the enormous, open-plan warehouse-style room inside.
