Swarthore College has rolled out a new free tuition program for students from families with annual income up to $200,000.gettySwarthmore College has announced that it will offer free tuition for students from families with annual household incomes of $200,000 or less. The new Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee will go into effect for the 2027-28 academic year. Only domestic students will be eligible for the offer. “The Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee is a powerful demonstration of our belief that a student’s intellectual curiosity, creativity, and talent should decide what’s possible, not whether they can pay for tuition,” said Swarthmore President Valerie Smith, in a news release. “The program builds on our already robust commitment to access and affordability, and we hope it communicates to families that their financial circumstances are not a barrier to a transformational liberal arts education at Swarthmore.”The announcement represents a significant expansion of financial aid by Swarthmore, one of the nations’s leading liberal arts colleges. It has practiced need-blind admissions for domestic students since the 1950s, meaning that a student’s ability to pay for his or her education is not considered as a factor in the college’s admissions decisions. Swarthmore also provides enough institutional aid to meet 100% of financial need for all students, including international students, up to the full cost of attendance, including tuition, housing, food, class materials, and other expenses. In addition, all of Swarthmore’s institutional aid is loan-free, meaning that students do not have to repay the college.Swarthmore’s financial aid budget for the upcoming academic year will top $71 million, with an average annual financial aid package of more than $75,000 per student. Over half (56%) of Swarthmore’s students currently receive financial aid from the college. Swarthmore’s listed tuition and fee charges for the 2026-27 academic year will increase to $72,722 from $68,766, and total student charges — including housing, food, and the student activities fee — will reach $95,770.MORE FOR YOU"We recognize the complexities families face when navigating the costs of college, and one of our goals for the Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee is simplifying our message on affordability," said Swarthmore’s Director of Financial Aid Varo Duffins, in the release. "We also want to demonstrate to families that — even if you're earning $200,000, $250,000, $300,000 per year and, in some cases, more — you may qualify for financial aid at Swarthmore."Swarthmore funds its financial aid program primarily through its endowment, which at the end of Fiscal Year 2025 stood at $2.8 billion, equal to about $1.677 million per student, making it one of the largest per-student endowments among all American colleges and universities. With today’s announcement, Swarthmore joins a growing list of colleges and universities that have recently rolled out free tuition offers tailored to attract and support middle class students. Earlier this month the University of Chicago announced that it would guarantee free tuition starting in the fall of 2027 for undergraduate students from families with annual income less than $250,000.In January, Yale University announced it was expanding its financial aid program and would, beginning next fall, offer free tuition to entering undergraduates from families with annual incomes below $200,000 and cover all the costs of attendance for those from families with incomes below $100,000.Two months later, the University of Notre Dame enhanced its undergraduate financial aid program so that, beginning in the 2026-27 academic year, students from families with annual income below $150,000 will have all their tuition costs covered. Families with income below $200,000 will receive need-based aid that will pay for half the cost of tuition.Late last year, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Utah, Smith College, Bryn Mawr College and the Stevens Institute of Technology each launched or expanded free tuition programs. And earlier in the fall, Wake Forest University, Emory University and The Ohio State University announced newly revised free tuition programs for eligible undergraduates.
